The disc labeled C3175510_05 contains ptf's for 5722XH2 - V5R1 iSeries
Access for Web. Load it in any CD-ROM and drill into the QPTFMNT folder.
This will list all of the products with PTF's on this CD. On an iSeries use
the command WRKOPTVOL DEV(OPT01) CSI(*NONE) to display this.

Subject: Network backups

Hi all

I have been asked about doing backups over a network connection from an
AS/400 to another machine; can be an AS/400, but we also have a pSeries
running TSM on the network as another option. The AS/400's will be running
V5R2. Bandwidth should not be a problem as we are talking fibre and gigabit
ethernet (or so I'm told).

I keep hearing that BRMS can do this, but can never locate anything that
tells me how; all I can find indicates that BRMS network feature allows
machines in a BRMS network to share policies, tape pools and the like. I
figure that BRMS involvement in this scenario is most likely as a client to
a TSM server.

Any and all opinions welcomed plus any experiences and advice :)

Regards
Evan Harris

Evan,
Why not use one of the High Availability products like Data Mirror i
Cluster to create a DR 400 sight on the other end of the Network
and get more value out of what you are doing?

That's what I thought you said. What interface DO you have to the

Does it possibly have a FTP server? You can find out by executing

ftp xx.xx.xx.xx

where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address of the appliance. You DO need a user ID
and password, probably. You don't really to know Unix to user ftp.

If there is a telnet or browser interface, can you add scripts? Is there
the abiblity to schedule things, with at or cron, maybe?

Vern,

Yes, the appliance has an FTP server and I've been able to FTP into it (from
a 5250 session). Once there, trying to navigate to the mail archive folder
(using the 'cd' command) has been unsuccessful. So, I'm in touch with the
manufacturer about that. Using the web browser gets you to the
administrator functions; other than that, it's locked down. A rep from the
company that sold us the box says its running Linux; I have no exposure to
linux and very limited exposure to unix so that's why I've wanted a solution
to run from the AS/400.

        Rob,

Please come here (Richmond, VA) and try to explain that to all the
Southerners here who think that "y'all" is singular and "all y'all"
is
plural. My freshman year RA quite succinctly explained that "y'all"
corrects one of the most severe failings of the English language (at
least
in the minds of Southerners), the fact that "you" is both singular
and
        plural.

subject: PTF Disc 5 of 4 ???

Greetings,

I've got a PTF question and any thoughts would be appreciated. We're at
V5R1. Last week a cum PTF order that I had placed came in. The cum
consisted of 5 CD's all labeled C3175510_xx (xx=01, 02, etc. thru 05).
When I did the GO PTF option #8 and selected all PTF's it displayed 1 of 4,
2 of 4, etc as they were loading. It never used the 5th CD. Is it likely
that this CD has the cover letters, additional PTF's, or it's just a
coaster they sent as a promotion? I've loaded PTF's before but as long as
I can remember it's always asked for all of the CD's or tapes.

When I do a DSPOPT I get:

                       Display Optical Volume Attributes

   Volume . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : C3175510_05

subject: Re: Netgear FVS318 VPN connection

Peter

I don't know NetGear - we use a LinkSys VPN router. Usually there's a log
on the router, probably accessible through a browser.

Setting up a W2K or XP IP Security policy is one of the worst, most
frustrating exercises I know of. If you don't click on all the right
circles and squares and other arcane weirdness, nothing works. You might
also go to LinkSys' site and find the downloads for their VPN router - that
manual has an extensive section on setting this up. When I follow every
step very carefully, sometimes it works. :-(

But when I have set one up, getting the 'Negotiating...' statuses is normal
for the first attempt--it's how I establish the connection--then the next
attempts at connecting (FTP, NetServer, etc.) should work without comment.
Try a telnet in a command prompt after your ping. Also, see if the router
is set up not to respond to ping. This will not stop the VPN connection but
may confuse you when you get no other response.

If that does not work, you maybe should review your policy setup, maybe
remove the one you have and start over. But check the log on the router, if
you can.

I much prefer a separate client - I use SSH Sentinel - don't know if you
can find a freely-usable copy anymore - it is quite stable and easy to set
up.
