Never use the calling cards from your room - they do charge for that. Some 
hotels even block all 800 numbers registered to calling card companies.  I 
had a gas station pay phone which blocked both 800-call-att and whatever 
the number was for MCI.

Have you heard of a cell phone?  However I can see your modem concerns.

Just a word of warrning:

It's not just the Gaylord Palms that charges exorbinant amounts for LD,
hotels are notorious for it, that's why whenever I travel I stop @
Walmart and get one of those .05 minute calling cards.  Just make sure
they also don't charge crazy amt's for local or 800 access also!!
