This is going to take some time, have to figure out the exact data to send
(it's all in XML, login profile, pswrd, data etc.) this could take awhile

Even though the characters aren't displaying, they are still being sent
from your keyboard to the iSeries program.

If you need to see them, you can probably turn on "Local Echo" in the
preferences of your telnet client.  Otherwise, you can just take it on
faith that what you type is being sent. :)
