We IPL once a month whether we need to or not, and I have always done the Install of PTF packages prior to the save. Using Option 8 immediate PTF's will apply immediately and delayed PTF's will be set to apply at IPL time. Immediate PTF's that require an action, like restarting TCP or MQ Series, etc. will show a status of "Temporarily applied - ACN" It is important to remember that your save will save the system with the PTF's in the status that they are in at the time of the save. In other words, if you did for some reason have to reload the system using this backup the delayed PTF's would need to be reapplied. If one of the PTF's was responsible for the reload you would need to remove it before IPLing or use an earlier backup. I would also recommend that you get familiar with the processes for removing PTF's, both temporarily and permanently. On your concerns: 1.) IMHO I do not think that it is dangerous to load/apply ptf's prior to the save. Some will disagree with me. 2.) Your running applications should not be affected by this. Immediate PTF's will either require an action or will not affect the running program, only the next restart. The LODPTF command (using the defaults) will permanently apply superseded PTFs. Install program temporary fix package, prior to save Currently, when doing our downtimes, we do: RCLSTG, etc, Save of entire system Some cleanup. GO PTF 8. Install program temporary fix package However, since we are moving to Virtual Optical drives instead of the CD's I am thinking of doing the GO PTF, 8, earlier in the week and not telling it to IPL. That will free up some save time since now there won't be that 3GB used up by the virtual optical drives. Concerns are these: 1) Is it dangerous to load/apply these ptf's prior to the save? 2) I realize that the GO PTF, 8, is a delayed ptf. However do some of these apply immediate even if you tell it delayed? I think I recall there were even certain ptf's that simply doing a LODPTF on automatically applied them; and permanently. I wouldn't want to affect running applications by doing this.
