Chapter ten has a bunch of good stuff about UDFs.  Check with Rob Berendt as
he's been one of the UDF evangelists on these fora.

Isn't that the sort of thing UDFs are for?  As I recall, a UDF can be used
much like a BIF within a SQL statement.  I haven't tried it, so I may be
wrong in my assumptions... <g>
