While you could use the channel (using virtual lan) and skip an additional lan card, I wouldn't. You still want that additional router in there to separate your DMZ. Oh, I suppose you could go from your DMZ to a Linux partition running a firewall back to your backend LPAR. Therefore, I was told that I needed additional cabling, printers, and other hardware. But in the case of just running WebSphere on it, would I need anything?
