You all raise some interesting points, Yet the same thing is happening to Irish citizens, in the UK, Belgium, etc. Contractors and 'permanent' IT staff out of a job & the programming outsourced to India. And if you specialised in a proprietary system, you were caught both ways. Or rather, let go. Call me naive, but the H-1B visa issues aren't going to help us here. Protection for US citizens ? While getting used to a reduced lifestyle might be morally good, very very few of us are ever going to do it by choice. And a simpler lifestyle is only possible to the very rich : ) But if mainframes were the (fast, effective) dinosaurs once, are midranges next ? Because I constantly see places relying on servers which were just not built to address a multi-user base of more than 50. New people facing old issues, painfully reinventing the wheel while IBM etc have developed actual standards and go overlooked. So if it came to losing my job, but seeing the AS/400 thrive ...
