Hi Bruce

Thanks for the above help - it was just what we needed. I managed to
find the same info in InfoCenter, in the Manage Tape Libraries section
that Mike Shaw mentioned (thanks Mike), but the IBM docs aren't quite as
concise <g>. Had a bit of difficulty initially as our system were set to
vary on/off the previous tape drive unit and the 3494 didn't take too
kindly to that. Once that was sorted it's been working fine. We now have
our tapes all nicely categorised and our ops staff just pick the
appropriate one from a list and the backup routines take care of the
rest - initialising cartridges that require it & mounting/demounting the
category before/after the saves.
