Depends on the printer, but when it happens on our printer/scanner/fax/copier I found that following steps take care of the issue: 1. Shift-Reset to turn the printer off (doesn't really do it though) 2. pull the plug 3. go into printer options on PC and cancel all documents 4. plug the printer back on 5. do a dummy copy (seems to clear printer memory buffers - in conjunction with other steps) I know that this is crazy but since the manufacturer doesn't provide the fix for the software, I am stuck with this insanity.
