Jim:

Glad you got it working. Hard to picture a site with four T-R subnets, at least
one firewall, who knows what all else, and just the poor AS/400 COBOL guy to
diagnose network problems. That is, I've been in similar situations but it
still doesn't make sense that a company works in that way.

Now, traceroute is an almost indispensible network troubleshooting tool. Ping
is useful; traceroute is the next step up. Ping basically says "Do I get
there?" Traceroute route says "How do I get there? I.e., what equipment along
the way took part in guiding me down my route?"

I'm not sure if the TRACEROUTE command is installed by default or if it's part
of TCP/IP Comm utilities or it's part of an optional component such as DNS like
the NSLOOKUP command was. But for V5, you can prompt:

 ==> traceroute <F4>

Normally you'd just enter the remote host name or IP address for the RMTSYS()
parameter and ignore everything else. I couldn't explain what it is or how to
use it any better than you can see just by trying the command. If you use an IP
address on the command line, be sure to enclose it in quotes.

On a Win2000 PC, the command is spelled tracert and you'll get the help by just
typing the command and pressing <Enter>.

Various other commands are available, but I rarely need anything beyond
traceroute/tracert. I always have a mental image of what should be seen along
the route and the list of nodes usually shows an unexpected turn somewhere.
When the problem is deeper than what traceroute is good for, it's usually
beyond me anyway.
