Hello, Rob: why not to ask them to help you improving your knowledge ? Ask them to let you build a library, access manuals, try compilation, and son on.... The company should appreciate your approach: you are at least intersted to improve your competence by yourself. I wish you al lthe best, may be the company will evaluate you as a possible future employee; why not ? As you know, the approach is important, the knowledge will come. Hope this helps.
