The issue is not CPU and memory - the bottleneck is still physical I/O. Putting off maintenance of a seldom-used index will still have a tremendous impact, esp. over large files. And more so, the more of these logicals there are. Every addition/deletion of a record means every logical needs maintenance - the more there are, the worse. And this all involves I/O. Unless you delay this maintenance until needed. A long-running batch update can be helped immensely.
