On the eServer front, zSeries revenue plunged 16 percent compared to 1Q02,
IBM reported, a dip Big Blue had anticipated because of the numbers of
customers delaying their purchases until the imminent arrival of the new
T-Rex zSeries in the second quarter. The falloff in mainframe revenue was
offset by strong performance from the pSeries (up 15 percent), the xSeries
(up 20 percent), and the iSeries (up 22 percent). While the iSeries
performed well, its revenue fell short of the 35 percent increase over 1Q02
expected by financial analysts SoundView Technology Group.
While a good thing for the iSeries community, the boost in iSeries revenue
may be a little misleading, according to analyst Tom Bittman, a Gartner
Group v.p. and research director. "We're certainly seeing the iSeries
revenue grow," he says,"but we're comparing it to a perfectly horrible first
quarter last year."
