Sorry Ken But in restricted stat your SDLC connection doesn't work. The current Operations Console work using TCP/IP connection on a very low level, but so does the origional Console using Twinax communications. To be able to use any console you need some kind of communication. I think the biggest challenge will be having a second screen as a console. I think this is not possible (coorect me if I am wrong) One way it can be done on a twinax console is using a PC with a twinaxcard as the Console and making a connection to this PC using your prefered way of communications. Using a PC als Console (either twinax of using Operatios Console or Lan Console) is the easiest way to be able to connect to the console remote. I know this means involving a MS solution in a better constructed iSeries environment. But as long as IBM doesn't give use a Unix (Linux) solution for the console we have to use MS. CA has a function called the Operations console, but CA runs on TCP/IP, which is not what your boss was referring to. When TCP/IP goes down, (yes , that day will happen), you'll need to, as system operator or security officer log onto the /400. I use an Sync SDLC connection with a modem (IBM 7855) , to a remote /400, at 9600 baud, and it works quite well. You must of course configure the controllers at that host. Hope this is of some help, the only problem that might occur, is having the phone line down at the same time as TCP/IP Ken -----Original Message----- From: William A.(Tony) Corbett [mailto:corbett@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Friday, April 04, 2003 3:12 PM To: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxx com Subject: Setup an alternate console Hi, Has anyone successfully set up an alternate console on a system using a twinax console (terminal)? My boss wants to set up a PC as an alternate console, purpose being remote access to the AS400 when in restricted state or in case of a system problem causing TCP/IP to be down. I don't know how this can be done. Your help is appreciated. TIA AS/Resources, Inc.
