Pedro, I believe that is the only way to do this. (You COULD use OPNQRYF by building the command string every time, but nobody wants to work that hard anymore.)

Merge fields in Query/400 come from database files and cannot be used for this. But you can RTVQMQRY from a QRYDFN with merge fields and get the substitution variables automatically.

I recommend using uppercase for the variable name, otherwise you need to quote the variable name in the SETVAR parameter.

Look at the Query Management Programming manual (under Database in InfoCenter) for help on substitution variables, esp. about quoted strings, converting QRYDFNs, lots of tips that are not found in the Query Manager manual, etc.
