If your performance analysis shows that you would take a big performance hit with the fewer drives, then you may want to consider either 15kRPM drives from an internal disk vendor or upgrading to V5R2 and taking advantage of some new hardware. You can order 15kRPM drives, but this may only apply if you have the either the 5094, 5095, or 5294 towers or the newest 800, 810, 825, 870, or 890. However, you can order the newer disk controllers with a much greater capacity cache. As I had mentioned you can also get the 15k drives now. IBM stated "somewhere" in their website that in the other eServer lines that the 15k drives exhibited 80% greater performance than the 10k drives. Couple those (or the IBM 4319 drives you mentioned) with the newer disk controllers and you may not have a performance problem after all.
