Simon,

That will work fantastic.  Handling this from the Client is not an option. 
 I cannot control what client is being used.

Only saw that message file in QTCP and not in QSYS.  (V5R2).  Am I missing 
something?

Since the message is being sent by the FTP server and it appears to use 
the 
profile name profiled by the exit point you cannot control the contents of 

the message substitution data ... however you can control whether that 
data 
is displayed.

Change message TCP11AF in the QTCPMSGF file to read:
                 230 User logged on.

That might satisfy your requirement. Note that QTCPMSGF appears in QTCP 
and 
QSYS and any NLS libraries you may have installed.
