Years ago, back when we made wire, (before we sold off that division), we rolled our own. We had counters that would increment as the wire went over the roller to track feet. And we had various other inputs. We had a PC in the middle controlling all this. Article was in the May 1988 edition of Systems 3X World. I think we have one person here (who worked on it) left from when we last had that system running. We sold the rest off to International Wire.
