In my EXPERIENCE it will RUN with a failed load source it will NOT IPL despite RAID protection. The SRC code displayed when IPL is attempted indicates a missing/failed load source. This does not make sense to me because I was of the impression that the disks units were masked to the OS by the RAID logic. Requests to the failed unit should have been returned correctly by the RAID card. Nonetheless no matter what I tried (and I tried plenty with the failed unit as well as a replacement unit installed) there was no way to replace the bugger and rebuild it. Even IPLing from SLIC did not give me access to that raid set for rebuild.

In my case the system had to be reloaded because some doofus turned the machine off rather than deal with the problem at the time it occurred. (Same doofus who got to load all the CDs and PTFs.....)

Hi all,
I'm on a course at present; the subject came up in general
discussion, "will an AS400 / iSeries keep running if the load-src disk fails
while it is under RAID-5 protection?".

The general concensus was that it would continue to run, but would not IPL.
Has anyone been here and have the definitive answer?

I suspect the answer may be a 'that depends", but I like to know.
