If you're mixing and matching RPG/Java then you probably want a machine that will run the current version of operating system, which, at this time, happens to be V5R2. Some of the cheap boxes out there can't. If you're attempting to avoid interactive then I'd suggest having some horsepower in your PC's and using Code/400. The java, is it strictly server side, or will you be serving up web pages? Because if you are planning on WebSphere then that comes into play. I'm not a hardware-type of guy, so I really don't know where to start when configuring a system. I know that I would need RPG/ILE/SQL/Java and such. I also would be using PCs for workstations and I would attempt to avoid the interactive subsystem for all products. What is a decent config? And how much should I expect to pay? Latest technology is unnecessary - just a box do connect to, develop software, compile and test. Feel free to contact me directly if this is off- topic.
