Marty, I totally understand the frustration (who doesn't) but the whole business of address harvesting is a very old and accepted business practise that, should it be stopped, would probably have you howling mad too. For example, have you ever accepted a "free professional subscription" to a magazine? Do you realize that the ONLY reason for a publisher to offer you a free subscription is so they can sell your name to other businesses. They're not trying to do you a favor. They want to sell you to their advertisers. Sometimes, these publishers exist primarily on the proceeds of their "list sales" activities, not the paid subscriber base, which almost certainly operates at a loss unless the circulation is very large. Without the list sales income, most of these industry specific magazines would not exist.... Email address harvesting is just a new twist on the same old theme, just much easier and potentially cheaper. Because it's exclusively an electronic medium, much of the collection activities can be automated and performed in-house. I don't know that I disagree with your sentiments, I just feel it's impossible to avoid. Just so you and other "upstanding businesses" know, if and when I provide you with my email addr it is because I want something from YOUR company, not your "business associates" and when I provide my mail addr to one of your "business associates" it is not because I want to receive emails from you. A big part of the spam problem is businesses sharing these addresses which are given to you in confidence. My company, Snap-eBooks, Inc. is NOT harvesting email names from this list, or any other list for that matter. I wouldn't condone that in the first place...but more imporantly...who has the time to go through and add all the names this way anyway!?! It takes all of my effort just to work for full time for a living AND run a company AND do the 99 other things I have to do each week. There's no time for sleazy business practices such as email harvesting such as this... So, if you should happen to get an email from Snap-eBooks it's because you either visited our site and provided us with your email address or you visited the site of one of our business associates and provided them with your email address, but NOT because you participated in an online forum such as this.
