Thanks for the replies! I can only say, d'oh to myself. No commas in
the numeric data, but what happens if there are double quotes embedded
in the character data? Will Excel puke on that? I just checked by
placing one double quote in the middle of a name field. Interestingly
enough, Excel opened the file without any mention of a problem, all of
the columns were aligned properly, but the name I put the double quote
in did not have the DQ in the middle of the name where I placed it, but
at the end of the field; also the letters after the position of DQ I
inserted appeared as well, so it appears that Excel "compressed out"
the data DQ but didn't know what to do with the ending DQ. This would
likely not be acceptable. So, I think I need to pursue tab-delimited
files. Again, does anyone know what character I should use to have
Excel recognize a tab character? Links to IBM references would be
great!

Jim, thank you for the example CL. You saved me from a Friday
afternoon headache to dwell on all weekend! Why is it that we must do
a CPYTOSTMF for the express purpose of creating an object in the
correct code page so the data we copy to it in the CPYTOIMPF can be
read properly by Excel?!?!? Sheesh!
