Yes - use the > and >> from tape stats in SST or PRTERRLOG *VOLSTAT
They take into account the type of tape drive and whether or not high
temporary errors are "normal" for that format.

Then what do we use to determine if the tape and/or the drive needs work?
The > or the >> on the tape stats?

Anyone else know where these stats are?

Tape error stats on different types of drives can not be directly
compared.  Some drive types report very high temporary errors (QIC, 8mm),
but the error correction capabilities take care of that.  There was a
document I saw from IBM a few years ago listing what were acceptable
temporary error rates for different drive types, but I can't locate it
right now.
