The System/38 was introduced in 1978, with first customer shipments in 1979. It was withdrawn from marketing almost immediately. When it was reintroduced, tape and 3370's were added. IBM re-introduced it with 3370 disk drives that allowed enough storage to make it functional in 1981. The System/36 was introduced in 1983 or early 1984, IIRC.
