Buffer contents, which is then written to the database record.

The buffer contents? or the record? The buffer contents will contain, in
case of an update, the old snapshot of the record and the new snapshot, in
the extended contents of the buffer. If the sequence number is a part of
the record, it will be there, you just have to figure out the layout of the
buffer (variable portion, based on record length, the offset is included as
a binary in the buffer itself before the record(s).

I think the only other way would be to reread the record that was just
       updated/inserted.
