At this point, Clare, it's got to be a bug.  If a simple fetch doesn't work,
but a CHAIN does, then something bizarre is happening.  Please let us know
the results of this, because it has some potentially serious side effects
for everyone.  "Silent" errors like this are the worst possible scenario.
