We do on-line transaction processing via dial up POS (credit card)
terminals, 5250 terminals, leased lines, TCP/IP sockets, and Web Servers.
We have two systems dedicated to this application. One is in a remote
office and basically un-manned. When is was a mere model 200/2030 it ran
for 15 months without a PTF loaded or a re-boot. It was only re-booted
after the UPS died during a prolonged power outage. Upon power restored, it
boot back up and contacted our AS400 here to start the data mirroring
process without any intervention. This system was latter upgraded to a
170/2289 and has been running for 2 years, only shut down to be moved from
one room to another.

The one located at our head quarters was a model 400/2131 until last
September. It is now a 170/2291 used box that after 3 year software
subscription and 3 year hardware maintenance came in under $10,000. We
never backup the data or applications or systems. (Fully mirrored data and
applications so why backup!) We only load PTFs if we have a problem, which
we don't seem to have with these boxes.

Our main system is a 720/2062/1502. It controls the bi-directional
mirroring of our transactions as well as a full install of the application
so we can switch over is the local 170 was to fail. It also runs all the
traditional business applications.

I'm looking for material for a series of articles on "unusual" uses of
AS/400s and/or iSeries systems.
