<SNIP> Many of the old programs I have to work on use *LDA to pass parameters. The unix equivalent is environment variables. I prefer environment variables to the local data area because you don't have to start and end positions. Instead you have to use variable names <SNIP> James Rich James, great perception of the *LDA (environmental variable that is). However you conclusion is in error. Any shop that actually used the LDA as you discribed would always use it strictly from an Externally Defined D/S. Thus the application base's usage is strictly by Variable Name and restricting any Byte location usage that it is wrappered away from the application base. So it basically really works.
