This is a multipart message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Let me try translating the article. Often times what people did was create an externally defined datastructure, based on the file. Then instead of Select fld1, fld2 into :fld1, :fld2 ... They would do Select * into :myds... With the belief that this would insulate them from record format level checks. And it did - for awhile. With the understanding that all new fields were added to the end of the list. And if a field size changed, truncation may occur. Now, you can still do the externally defined data structure, but, do NOT do the SELECT * ... Instead, select just the fields you want. Truncation may still occur, if the field size changes (and you don't recompile). But if fields are added your program won't go casters up. Deleting fields are a different story... Yes SQLSTT is the ANSI standard. Not only that, but you do get more granular information from SQLSTT, and more consistent. For example, go the following web site and look up SQLSTT of 01503: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r2/ic2924/info/rzala/rzalafinder.htm You'll see two possible values for SQLCOD: +000 and +030. I suspect that on preV5 machines you'll get +000. On V5 you'll get +030.
