Thanks! The solution was to use OpsNav to look at Network|Servers|TCPIP
wherein I discovered that the NetServer job was not started.  Once I started
it, I was able to map a drive to the share over my VPN connection to the
client's WAN.

I should've known better than to assume, but knowing that some users were
mapped with no problem threw me off.  I'm still not sure why that is, but my
theory is that when they initially mapped the drive, the QZLSSERVER job
spawns a QPWFSERVSO job which actually provides the drive mapping for a
particular user.  Before I started the QZLSSERVER job, there were several
active QPWFSERVSO jobs running.

Just a side note: contrary to your logic (which sure sounded good) there is
no guest profile set up on this AS400, according to OpsNav.
