A small contribution (from the point of view of a programmer):
** the strong cooperation between OS and database
** the capability of handling subfiles
** the capability to handle database file both via SQL and standard VSAM
fashion
** the capability of externally refererencing data
** no native graphical capabilities
** a lot of architectural objects (data queue, and so on)
