Regular RPG (III) cannot get return codes from calls - ILE RPG can. Have
you looke dat the interoperability chapter (if any) in the COBOL and RPG
(ILE) manuals?

I appreciate your response, Howard. In this case, the RETURN-CODE is a COBOL
"thing." I am familiar with communicating with COBOL from RPG using
parms/linkage, but in this case it's an actual program return code rather
than a parm we're passing back and forth. Here is a sample from the COBOL
code:

MOVE 99 TO RETURN-CODE
STOP RUN
