John may not be in a position to post code (or reveal the technique) of something his company considers confidential. To someone who is just an average programmer, there is value in knowing how easy or how hard something would be to code yourself. Then they can make a decision whether they want to pursue coding or purchasing. (Plus he did say "buying a Security package", not "buy my security package". A subtle difference).
