I also need to convert data from a PC-based system written in MicroFocus COBOL to the AS/400. I have found a couple of articles in Midrange-L regarding Oracle -> AS/400 data conversion, with suggestions as to how to perform the conversion: 1) Using a PC connected to both systems with Toad to pull the scripts for building the files from Oracle and then using Ops Navigator to build them on the AS/400, with a Java program to copy the data. 2) Use ERWin instead of Toad to pull & edit the scripts from Oracle & use Ops Nav to create the files on the AS/400, export the Oracle data to a delimited file and copy it to the IFS, then use CPYFRMIMPF to load the files. As far as the MicroFocus database files, I'm not sure of the best approach. I have never worked with MicroFocus COBOL or any of their utilities (if they have any) for importing/exporting data. Will we need to write COBOL programs to unload the files? I am really looking for the LOW-TECH approach to performing this conversion. This is a one-shot conversion and we want the minimize the amount of time spent converting the data while at the same time minimizing the amount of programming effort expended. I also know that we can buy a data conversion tool such as Data Junction, but we really don't know if it is necessary to buy data conversion software, given the various native ways of exporting and importing data. I'm pretty sure that I DON'T want to use Client Access to transfer the files. I have not had great success when there were large numbers of records to transfer.... We want a solution that will not crash in the middle of a conversion. We have several files that have millions of records that need conversion, and we DON'T want to spend our time working through technical problems with the conversion.
