Symbolic links are not the problem. _Following_ symbolic links when what I
want is to know that the object IS a symbolic link is the problem. In other
words, when I use stat() and test for ISLNK (I think that's the macro), it
is not identified as a link, because the link has been resolved to the
object pointed at. So I needed to use lstat, which does not resolve the link.
