Didn't "middleware" used to mean software that mediated between a service
requestor and service provider?  Seems to me it was one of the hallowed
buzzwords of the client-server era. IIRC it referred specifically to
software that handled the communication between client and server so that,
theoretically, neither client nor server had to know anything about each
other.

I can see how the concept applies here.  I'm just surprised that it's
survived.
