Why create the logical in the first place?
Can't you already do
select * from qtemp/james where year(mydate)=2002
select * from qtemp/james where month(mydate)=11
select year(mydate), month(mydate), mydate, myfield
from qtemp/james
order by mydate desc
YEAR ( MYDATE ) MONTH ( MYDATE ) MYDATE MYFIELD
         2,002 2 02/28/02 test
         2,002 1 01/31/02 test
         2,001 12 12/05/01 test
         2,001 11 11/13/01 test

I have a physical file that contains a date field in it. I want to create
a logical file over it that is keyed by just the year and month portion of
the date field. The DDS manual tells me that I can't use SST on date
fields. Anyone know a way I can create a field in a logical file that is
a portion of a date field?
