I prefer sub-second response time. The last time I was in a job where we had to meet service levels, we also had to provide sub-second average response time. I think 4 seconds is a reasonable maximum, unless you're talking about a modern, distributed system with a fat GUI client or web interface. Then, of course, it's more like 60 - 120 second average response time, 5 minute max. and if you can't manage that, just pop a message that says, "MSSQL error - please try again later." ;-) -Marty
