German, like most Western European languages, uses character set 697 which
is associated with many code pages/CCSIDs (37 (US/Canada), 273 (Germany),
277 (Denmark, Norway), 278 (Finland, Sweden), 280 (Italy), etc (any of
which can display umlauts, etc.).  What is most likely happening is that
the CCSID/code page of the data is not the same as the CCSID/code page of
your display device.  Verify the CCSID/CHRID of your msgf, job, dspf, and
devd and review the International Application Development manual which
discusses these various CCSID considerations (and in addition has CCSID
tables which show you what character is associated with what code point in
the CCSID -- which can help you figure out why the umlaut became 3/4).

Folks,

What code page do I use to display umlauts and other fun German things?

We are changing our system to use MSGF entries for all "literals" in our
display files so we can "easily" have multiple-language support.  We have
our first round of data back from the translators.  However, some
characters did not map according to expecatations - the umlaut became the
3/4 symbol, for instance.
