The little device attached to the modems is a null modem adapter. IBM will gladly sell you a $125 "special cable", but a plain old male to male, 25 pin serial cable and a $7 null modem adapter from Radio Shack accomplishes the same thing. Basically the AWSC looks to the system like a twinax controller. As far as I remember the box does not autocreate these devices, so you will need to create device descriptions attached to the controller. You say the controller is in a VRYON PENDING status, are there any devices attached to the controller? What are their status? As a test you might want to disconnect the modems and hook a PC directly to the AWSC with a serial cable (do not use the null modem adapter) and then fire up Crosstalk, point it to your serial comm port (rather than the modem) and see if you can get a signon screen. The max speed for the AWSC ports is 19200. Also, the VT100 terminal emulation does work OK, as long as you remember the map. If not, once you are connected to the AWSC, you can use the command DSPVT100MAP (I think that is the command), and it will show you all the command sequences. I don't remember if cross talk supports it, but most of the old dial up comm programs allowed you to "map" keyboard command sequences so you could have a reasonable keyboard function (ie press F1 and the program sent ESC + 1) Good luck. cjg Carl J. When I got the machine it had an ASCII workstation controller attached and 4 Hayes 9600 modems connected. The modems have a small device connected to the cable running to the ASCII workstation controller that looks like a gender switcher. I'm attempting to dial in using Crosstalk 2.0.1 with a session configured as a VT100. When dialing in, the modems are connecting (I can tell this by the lights on the modem attached to the ASCII controller and by the sounds of the modem in the pc) but I don't get a sign on screen. I seem to remember from when I did this on another system about 10 years ago that once the connection is made you have to hit [enter] a few times but when I do this, the connection is dropped. The controller these modems are attached to is varied on and all the devices say "VARY ON PENDING". Any thoughts someone would like to offer on getting this to work would be greatly appreciated. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/cgi-bin/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@midrange.com Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
