James, The 500 discussed in this thread lends itself to that configuration. There are four disk slots in the system unit which are driven by the MFIOP. For additional drives, either an expansion chassis or top hat is added which would have room for eight or sixteen additional drives driven by an additional disk controller. So the default configuration on a model 500 is to mirror the load source and then add additional RAID sets in expansion units. With the 6xx models and following, there is generally room in the system enclosure for at least one full RAID set. In my experience, most machines are configured with the load source disk as part of a RAID set. It is a matter of a slight increase in protection with mirroring and some additional expense. Most installations seem to choose the configuration you have described. What model are you configuring?
