I think the answer is to purchase an IPDS feature for the 8100. IPDS is both a
format of data as well a protocol that gives you all the cmd and control
functions available on twinax even when the printer uses TCP/IP.

We have an HP8100 printer that is network attached and I have defined a CA
session and created a device for the printer and that part worked fine.
However the good folks forgot to mention that this printer needs to print
APU IPDS stuff so those reports just sit in the queue waiting for the
printer to be IPDS capable.

Meanwhile I attempted to define an IPDS printer using the IP address and
other things related to the 8100 but no joy, the device attempts to start
but quits immediately. I suspect for one thing that I needed to get rid of
the other device that I created for a standard ASCII device and did not! now
I can't get the original device to come alive, I get the message "Printer
powered off or not yet available" (according to the operator, the printer
was in power save mode)

So I guess I have two questions, what diabolical deed did I do to screw up
the original definition ? and
How can I get an 8100 to do IPDS work?
