Doug:
Thanks for all the advice. I have decided to just mirror the 4 6607s
for the time being. That will give me about 8 gig as you said. They
system was about 30% used of 12gig, so about 4 gig was in use. That
will leave me at 50% with the new DASD configuration. For now, that
will be fine.

Regarding your suggestion about moving to a 170. I have a 170 here at
the office already, and several other boxes (5) for several other
purposes. This machine runs a very specific function for a client,
works fine, speed is not an issue and neither is upgrading it. Capacity
is about the only issue I will have with it, and for now I thing the
mirrored 8 gig is my answer. I can always add the expansion 7117 later
and more DASD. This should hold me over for at least another year and
that is fine with me. My only problem with the who thing is that the
DASD was not protected in anyway..... No way to run a production system
even if you backup every day. So I will sleep better at night with the
mirroring. The box is old, runs v3r7, can not be upgraded, is paid for
and upgraded mostly from used parts and generated a nice monthly revenue
stream for our company..... No reason to mess with it anymore than we
have to.

cjg

Carl,

That would give much more capacity then just two sets of mirrored 6607's
off the MFIOP -- if capacity is an issue. It was also give more room
for additional tape drives if that would help, and mean you could easily
add more 6607's if storage needs warranted.

OTOH, V5R1 is the end of the road for the 400 and my 40S, not to mention
they aren't the fastest kid on the block. So if you can get by with 8GB
mirrored, I'd be hesitant about much money in parts for an upgrade. --
even if you installed the 7117 by yourself like I did (some time ago).

You might rather put the money toward a used 170 or other fairly cheap
box, and move your LPP licenses from the 400 to the 170. You'd get
faster performance, upgrades beyond V5R1, etc.

If it was me, I'd stick to the 8GB mirrored and watch for a cheap 170 or
whatever. Especially with the prospects of new machines being announced
in May, which may help drive down to resale of 170's or other models.
