E-mail isn't a "bizarre sort of telnet". They're both TCP protocols. They both use TCP connections, the only difference is what data is sent over that connection. With SMTP, your program sends the commands & data needed to transmit e-mail. With TELNET, your program displays anything that it receives, and sends anything that you type. That means that if you type the same data that an SMTP client would programatically send, that you'll end up sending mail -- just as an SMTP client does.
