I don't think it needs redesigned, just extended. Certainly, when creating , or extending any new OS, it is vital that the other OS's can communicate, and existing applications can run. The iSeries relies on Windows for its existence, because without Windows there is no CA/400, Operations console, etc. If IBM do away with Twinax an iSeries system cannot be administered without a Windows PC being present. Microsoft would have the oportunity of a lifetime, they could hold IBM to ransom. They could make changes and not document the interface. Even partially disabling the use of the iSeries would increase sales of NT at the expense of IBM. If IBM succeed in making serious inroads into the server market at the expense of NT, you can bet your bottom dollar that Microsoft will react. That is why I think the iSeries should have its own console. It should be able to stand alone. It should stand proud, not a subservient slave to some other operating system, no matter who wrote it.
