You should look at the authorization lists on the remote system. If a user is not in the list, he/she will get the file not found kind of thing. Might be the main issue here. Keeping security synchronized over multiple systems may be harder than synchronizing the data. You SHOULD be able to have only one copy of the data, esp. since it's read-only access. Any more than 1 is maintenance nightmare time. I'd bet there are specific messages to respond to if someone has a record locked on the remote file. I heartily recommend getting at the Distributed Database manuals, one for Management and one for Programming Dist DB. They'e accessible at InfoCenter.
