I had understood at one time that FTP (as a program product) technically belonged to some company actually named something like FTP Corp., and that the FTP on many/most boxes was used under license. This is foggy memory from years ago and might easily be wrong or simply obsolete due to release of code through open source or public domain routes. It might've been more true before various RFCs gave standard definitions for public use.
