One of the guys here was telling me about having to replace the Batteries on an old F02 box. He said the system was running slow and would shut down hard occasionally with no notice. Originally IBM told them they needed to upgrade the memory and a few other things to make it run faster. He said that one of their own techs who used to be a top tech at IBM looked at it one day put her hand in the machine pulled out a battery pack with 4 AA batteries and said the should probably be replaced. He said after they replaced the batteries the system started to perform better and from that point on the replaced the batteries about every 9 months or so to be sure... The 400 community is a great "nation" of people and, as we all know, the 400 is a damn good box to make a living with...now if we can only convince IBM! The reason for my sluggishness turned out to be a bad battery attached to one of the I/O cards. There was a message logged in QHST informing of a damaged I/O card but alas, it was only 2 lines and no more! So if you scrolled past it as I initially did...Too bad that message is not repeated as happens when an ASP threshhold percentage is being challenged. Boy, did it slow us down and it appears as if there was absolutely ZERO reflection of this within the software tools IBM has provided us. Still, I wouldn't trade in my career on the 400 for any other box and with all of the talented people in our user group, nothing can escape us for too long!
