There are terminal based clients (TBC) and windows based clients (WBC). Terminal based clients have a proprietary OS and boot directly into a tn5250 client. Physically they are a small book size computer with video, keyb, and etherent ports. They use any VGA or SVAG monitor (color or mono). They do NOT need a boot server for startup. They typically do text based email. They need little if no maintenance and are durable. They cost from $600 on up. Windows based clients are based on the WinCE OS. Physically they are the same size and shape as the TBC (plus a mouse) but offer the SM based Windows OS so you get GUI based emulation, email, and MS Internet Explorer. Perhaps you are also subject to the vagaries of Windows which is what you might be wanting to escape. They often need a boot server for startup. They cost from $900 on up. I'm not sure the benefits of a WBC over a Windows based PC but the TBC are a clear benefit in certain dumb terminal situations where you never want to muck with the box after installation.
