I am putting different sets of speculations in different replies.

This is purely the technical notion of how many sessions one user could have
on twinax connections.

When wired with Twinax, but using a PC, the ceiling on sessions at same
terminal was the number of sessions available on one twinax line or
controller (8 on S/36 numbered 0 to 7, doubled on 400), doubled again by
using alternate session (upper shift system request & enter, then select
another sign on), so I think the ceiling was 32, but each of the sessions,
for some types of software, needed to have different work station identities.
